ETHIOPIA: Surrender or Starve:

Travels in Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea (Vintage Departures) (Paperback)
by Robert D. Kaplan

Product Details

Paperback: 240 pages
Publisher: Vintage; Vintage edition (November 11, 2003)

Book Description

Robert D. Kaplan is one of our leading international journalists, someone who can explain the most complicated and volatile regions and show why they’re relevant to our world. In Surrender or Starve, Kaplan illuminates the fault lines in the Horn of Africa, which is emerging as a crucial region for America’s ongoing war on terrorism.

Reporting from Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea, Kaplan examines the factors behind the famine that ravaged the region in the 1980s, exploring the ethnic, religious, and class conflicts that are crucial for understanding the region today.

He offers a new foreword and afterword that show how the nations have developed since the famine, and why this region will only grow more important to the United States. Wielding his trademark ability to blend on-the-ground reporting and cogent analysis, Robert D. Kaplan introduces us to a fascinating part of the world, one that it would behoove all of us to know more about.

ETHIOPIA: The Kebra Negast (Paperback)
by E. A. Wallis Budge

Product Details

Paperback: 368 pages
Publisher: Cosimo (November, 2004)

Book Description

A "great storehouse of legends and traditions" according to translator E.A. Wallis Budge, 'The Kebra Nagast' most likely dates back to the sixth century AD, and provides an alternative view of many biblical stories.

According to this ancient text, the kings of Ethiopia were descended from Solomon, King of Israel, and the Queen of Sheba; the Ark of the Covenant had been brought from Jerusalem to Aksum by Meyelek, the son of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba; and the God of Israel had transferred his place of abode on earth from Jerusalem to Aksum, the ecclesiastical and political capital of Ethiopia.

ETHIOPIA: Power & Protest : Peasant Revolts in the Twentieth Century (Paperback) by Gebru Tareke

Book Description

This study of popular protest and resistance in Ethiopia focuses on three important peasant-based rebellions that occurred between 1941 and 1970. The author attempts to uncover certain key features of popular protest in pre-revolutionary Ethiopia.

Drawing upon ample evidence, he concludes that these revolts were not a consequence of capitalist exploitation, as was usually the case in most Third World countries, but were connected with the rise of a modern, bureaucratic, multi-ethnic national state.

ETHIOPIAN peasants were neither conservative nor compliant, as is often assumed, although their defiance was nevertheless essentially non-revolutionary. These interesting and fresh findings also suggest a possible explanation for the eruption and intensification of armed conflict in rural Ethiopia after 1974.

On a theoretical level, the study makes a significant contribution to the ongoing analysis of social movements in agrarian societies.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

ETHIOPIA, the Unknown Land: A Cultural and Historical Guide (Hardcover)
by Stuart Munro-Hay

Product Details

Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: I.B.Tauris (May 3, 2002)

Book Description

Ethiopia is a land utterly out of the common. It's like no other in its geography and geology, its fauna and flora, its people and their customs, and its long and fascinating history. Although it is not fashionable to say so among those who dream of African unity, Ethiopia has long preserved a sense of aparness, even from its closest African neighbours.

Its long domination by a warlike Christian population in the highlands, amid the neighbouring Muslims and animists, its very ancient literate civilisation based on a Semitic-speaking ruling elite, and the very geography of the land itself have contributed to this element of exclusivity.

Vanishing Africa (Hardcover)
by Gianni Giansanti, Paolo Novaresio

Product Details

Hardcover: 504 pages
Publisher: White Star; Bk & DVD edition (November 27, 2004)

Book Description

A dead branch of the Rift Valley, worn hills and plains beaten by the relentless sun, this is the region that spreads around the valley of the Omo River. The wild and remote southern region of Ethiopia only appeared on maps little over a century ago when the first European explorers discovered there a mosaic of ethnic groups.

These are peoples that have remained isolated for centuries and that have retained their cultures and customs intact to the present day-peoples like the Surma, Mursi, Karo and many more. By examining a region in the heart of the Black Continent, the book attempts to trace the roots of remotest Africa: the cradle of man, where ancestral bonds with nature still exist.

By means of his camera and his pen, in this book the authors have encapsulated long years of study of the peoples and ethnic groups of this continent, in search of vanishing Africa.

About the Author

Gianni Giansanti began his professional career in 1978. Approached by the Sygma agency in 1981, he documented the coup d'état in Turkey and performed assignments in Haiti, El Salvador, Guatemala, Libya, Lebanon, Senegal, Poland, Greece, and Yugoslavia. In 1988, a photographic essay on the private life of Pope John Paul II in the Vatican won first prize from the World Press.

Paolo Novaresio graduated in contemporary history and for more than twenty years has been a full-time traveler. After a series of trips around the world, he has devoted his time entirely to Africa.

Recently he has concentrated his research in Kenya, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. He lives and works in Turin, Nairobi, and Johannesburg.

The ETHIOPIANS: A History (Peoples of Africa) (Paperback)
by Richard Pankhurst

Product Details

Paperback: 299 pages
Publisher: Blackwell Publishers (January, 2001)

Book Description

This is a history of the Ethiopians from pre-history to the present day. Drawing on research in archeology, anthropology, linguistics and on recent historiography, the book charts the development of Ethiopian peoples and their society, placing emphasis on the African origins of Ethiopian civilization.

The book opens with a review of Ethiopian prehistory, showing how the Ethiopian section of the African Rift Valley has come to be seen as the "cradle of humanity". It describes, for instance, the discovery of the remains of the oldest known hominid, "Lucy", in the middle Awash Valley, in 1974. The book then discusses Ethiopia in biblical time, reconsidering, for example, the legend of the Queen of Sheba. The author examines the various dynasties that ruled in the period up to the first Portuguese mission, and explores the subsequent political and religious struggles between Christians, Muslims and Falashas.

He discusses the social and economic effects of key stages in Ethiopian history such as the Gondar period and the era of the "Judges".

The book also examines the succession of modernizing monarchs that followed, culminating in the rule of Emperor Haile Selassie. The book concludes with a review of Ethiopian history and culture considering contemporary Ethiopia within an historical context.

About the Author

Richard Pankhurst who has lived in Ethiopia for over thirty years, is Professor at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Addis Ababa. His most recent books include A History of Ethiopian Towns from the Middle Ages to the Early Nineteenth Century (1982) and A Social History of Ethiopia (1990), and History of the Ethiopian Borderlands: Essays in Regional History (1997).

Marxist Modern: An Ethnographic History of the ETHIOPIAN Revolution (Paperback)
by Donald L. Donham

Product Details

Paperback: 284 pages
Publisher: University of California Press (June, 1999)

Book Description

Modernity has become a keyword in a number of recent intellectual discussions. In this book, Donald L. Donham shows that similar debates have long occurred, particularly among peoples located on the margins of world power and wealth. Based on extensive fieldwork in Ethiopia--conducted over a twenty-year period--Marxist Modern provides a cultural history of the Ethiopian revolution that highlights the role of modernist ideas.

Moving between the capital, Addis Ababa, and Maale, the home of a small ethnic group in the south, Donham constructs a narrative of upheaval and change, presenting local peoples understandings of events, as these echoed with and appropriated stories of other world revolutions.

With the help of poststructuralist insights and theories of narrative, Donham locates a recurrent dialectic between modernist Marxism, local Maale traditionalisms, and antimodernist, evangelical Christianity.

One of the most consequential outcomes of this interaction--until the late 1980s--was the creation of a more powerful state, one that penetrated peasant communities ever more deeply and pervasively.

Combining sophisticated theory with fascinating ethnographic detail, this study contributes to the theory of revolution as well as the study of modernity. In doing so, it seeks to integrate ethnography and history in a new way.

From the Back Cover

"Donham's beautifully written book makes a singular contribution to the emerging literature on global modernities. Donham creatively and seamlessly weaves together an array of textual fragments that enliven and enhance his ethnographic accounts, and together produce a fascinating book and a very good read." (Charles Piot, Duke University)--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Oromtitti: The Forgotten Women in Ethiopian History (Paperback) by Belletech Deressa

Product Details

Paperback: 160 pages
Publisher: Pentland Press (NC) (January, 2004)

Book Description

Belletech Deressa’s "Oromtitti: The Forgotten Women In Ethiopian History" is simultaneously a dedication to, and a cultural examination of, the women who helped shape the history of a nation. Deressa’s discussion of the roles of Oromo women in the history of Ethiopia echoes with a quiet, yet strong passion for her heritage and homeland.

Through examinations of these remarkable women—queens, teachers, martyrs and pioneers—Deressa paints a vivid picture of the women who struggled through their cultural obstacles to become prominent structures within the Oromo society.

About the Author

Belletech Deressa is currently the director for international development with the Division for Global Mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She is an educator, human rights activist and advocate for the justice of poor and marginalized groups. She is the first woman in her family to earn a degree, and the first Oromo woman with a doctorate degree. While she is a U.S. citizen, she is still very much concerned about the people and the future of Africa and the Oromo people.

An Introduction to the Medical History of ETHIOPIA (Paperback)
by Richard Pankhurst

Book Description
Climatic Factors

Ethiopia on many counts was geographically well situated. Normally, the climate of the highlands with its bright sunshine yet gentle heat is salubrious and invigorating, and two annual rainy seasons do much to cleanse the country of infection.

The value of these rains impressed observers such as the Englishman Charles Rey, who, writing of Addis Ababa in the 1920s, observed that after seven or eight months one looked forward to "the coming fierce downpours, to bring freshness to the air and cleanliness to the town." His compatriot Christine Sandford agreed that the weather did much to compensate for lack of medical facilities.

"It was," she wrote, "only the wonderful climate of the highlands," with their "dry air, brilliant sunshine, yet temperate heat," followed by the "cleansing torrents of the rainy season," that "checked the spread of infection and made epidemics very uncommon."

On a more personal note, she commented: 'The author brought up a family of six children in Addis Ababa and its vicinity without any infectious illness among them in over fifteen years, with the exception of one case of whooping cough, and occasional conjunctivitis, which, after a little experience, was avoided altogether.'

The highlands suffered, however, from sudden drops in temperature, particularly at night, as well as from considerable humidity during rains. Cold nights following upon warm or hot days were probably responsible for the high incidence of pneumonia, pleurisy, bronchitis, catarrh and other diseases of the respiratory organs. Heavy rainfall was likewise conductive to the colds, influenza, and bronchitis that were sometimes prevalent during the rains.

The lowlands, on the other hand, tended to be infested with mosquitoes and thus were subject to malaria. This disease was widespread in areas of low elevation, particularly during the rains, and was especially prevalent in narrow, densely wooded, and damp river valleys and swampy plains near rivers and lakes, as well as in the coastal area.
